WHAT’S CAUSING YOUR TMJ PAIN?
Set-up much like any other joint in the body, the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is comprised of a joint connection between your temporal bone and the mandible bone and is supported by multiple muscular tissues and non-contractile tissues. This region of your body can develop joint pain, muscular dysfunction, and inflammatory respones, like any other joint.
Causes of TMJ pain can vary person-to-person but often include sources of stress to the joint and regular lifestyle contributions. Habits like bruxism (unconscious clinching or grinding of teeth), nail or pencil biting, and poor-prolonged posture can play a huge role in your symptoms. It is also possible to experience jaw pain following trauma or even after planned dental procedures (often due to prolonged open positioning).

HOW WE TREAT TMJ PAIN
At Cultivate, we believe that the best management for jaw pain (TMJ pain) occurs when we combine treatment both on and off of the treatment table.
As always, treatment begins with an in-depth evaluation to rule-in or out any contribution from surrounding areas, as the cervical spine (neck) and upper thoracic spine (upper back) can often contribute to jaw pain presentations.
We then develope a plan to address the root causes with treatments like spinal manipulation and mobilization, joint mobilization, dry needling, and exercise, CRITICAL TREATING JAW PAIN, we also like to consider the M.E.D.S. approach for ensuring we are tackling all areas of our person to reduce contributions to your pain:
-
-
Mindfulness – Managing stressors, becoming aware of unconscious behaviors contributing to pain, and creating space for rest and relaxation to help reduce headache symptoms
-
Exercise – Like any other area of our body, MOVEMENT IS MEDICINE and can help reduce your pain while helping your become healthier and feel better generally
-
Diet – Reducing processed sugar and alcohol consumption (very pro-inflammatory) while temporarily making dietary modifications (if needed) to reduce pain with eating.
-
Sleep — Consistent wake times and sleep hygiene to help maximize your body’s recovery
